Definition

A druzy is sets of tiny crystals of minerals that form on the surface of another stone. There are many types of druzy, because there are many types of minerals. Each type of druzy has particular characteristics, such as crystal size, luster and color. Quartz is one of the most common druzy types because of the prevalence of silica throughout the world. No matter what mineral forms the druzy, the overall appearance usually resembles that of sugar. The tiny crystals are considered beautiful because, like large gemstones, they glitter and catch rays of light.

Origin

The geological process that forms a druzy, the layer of crystals on the rock, occurs when water brings minerals onto a rock's surface. When the water evaporates, cooling occurs and the minerals are left behind to form crystals on top of the rock. Depending on the minerals, druzy gemstones can be almost any color of the rainbow, including white, pink, blue, purple, green or black.

Geography

Druzy can be found in any location in which there is a place for water to collect and evaporate on rock. It most often appears along river beds and shorelines. It therefore is helpful for collectors, whether commercial or otherwise, to be aware of the minerals common to an area when they look for a particular type of druzy.

Care of Druzy Jewelry

We work with a variety of natural gemstones including druzy, agate, crystal quartz and many, many more. Below are some guidelines to help you care for your new treasure.

Take care with your natural gemstones. Avoid knocking or dropping your stone as they are fragile and can easily crack or break.

To clean your natural gemstones, simply wipe them clean with a soft dry cloth. Do not immerse in harsh chemicals, or use ultrasonic cleaners.

Always remove your jewelry before using any product that contains bleach.  Bleach can cause gold and other metal alloys to breakdown leaving the metal irreparably damaged.

Besides chlorine bleach, denatured alcohol, turpentine, acetone, and ammonia can also cause harm.  These chemicals can dull or even pit the surface of the druzy and other gemstones.

Remove your jewelry before showering, swimming or bathing in hot tubs. Avoid exposing jewelry to shampoo or other beauty care products like hair spray, hair dyes, spray tan, lotions or perfumes.

Store your jewelry in a safe place like a pouch, box or lined jewelry case.

With a little care, your natural gemstone jewelry will remain as sparkling and beautiful as the day we made it!
