Seth Co-Founder of Mickey Lynn

1. How and when did you know you wanted to be a business owner?

There wasn’t a single defining moment, all I know is that I never really worked harder or was more committed than for myself.  I wasn’t a horrible employee but I wasn’t exemplary either. I learned that to be truly fulfilled I needed to create my own destiny, step up to challenges, take calculated risks and answer to who was staring back at me in the mirror everyday of my life.

2. Bring us back to the beginning. How did it all come about when you and Mickey decided to bring ML to life?

Mickey and I are BEST friends and when you find a relationship like that, you want to spend every waking hour with each other... so we knew that we wanted to do something together.  One Sunday evening in 2006 we were in our study and Mickey was creating jewelry for her friends and herself. She was never truly happy with the styles of jewelry that existed at that time and ended up either creating her own or modifying pieces that she purchased.  We started dreaming, “could we turn this into a business?”

We both love making others happy and knew that this element existed here so we went with our gut.  I strolled down to the hottest boutique that we knew at the time, Mitzi & Romano’s, and met with the buyer. While she loved the pieces, she didn’t know us at all so we left our pieces on consignment there.  If the pieces sold, she would buy the next round. They all sold over the weekend and she wanted more! This is where ‘burning the candle at both ends’ started for us. From there on, we both worked day and night to pay the bills and create something magical that we truly believed in.

3. What are you most grateful for in your business today?

I’m grateful for the strong relationships with great people and their businesses worldwide.  We exist today because of wonderful individuals trusting in us to provide their customers with an authentic and unique experience and we surround ourselves with talented artists to fulfill this commitment.

4. What do you love most about being a business owner?

Controlling my own destiny is why I love it.  We continually push ourselves to step outside our comfort zone and seek out things that truly help our business grow to the next level and this is so exhilarating for me.  I love a good fight.  We all know that you may crush it some days and then get hit by a sucker punch the next...understanding these hard times are when you need to push the most.

5. Where do you find your drive when things aren’t easy?

Well, it just so happens that the person on the other side of the studio is Mickey and this might sound really hokey but we have always been there for each other when obstacles arise.  We talk, we strategize and we implement whatever it takes to overcome whatever it is and we conquer.

6. Where do you find inspiration today to be a better business owner, partner, etc...?

I’ve gotten into a habit of coffee and reading every morning.  Topics are usually business related but can fall into general self-help as well.  I’ve learned that no one can just figure it out along the way.  We need guides.  We need to listen to others that have ‘been there done that.’  That has been hugely instrumental for me.

7. Anything I didn't ask that you want to share?

I believe that having a mentor is a crucial part in every business.  Don’t be afraid to seek out the help, people truly want to help you succeed -  they are happy to share their knowledge and experience just like someday I hope to do the same for someone in need.

Also, work hard, play hard!  We’re on this beautiful planet for a blink of an eye and you can’t let it pass you by.
